Ep 188. Breathing Space + A Page From My Wonder Journal
Hello beautiful and welcome to the Come to Your Senses podcast. I'm your host, award winning certified feminine embodiment coach, licensed esthetician, and enthusiastic foster dog mama to animals across the land. Mary Lofgren Here we explore how to bring more richness, radiance, peace and pleasure to our lives, homes and hearts through the joy of beauty, the wisdom of the body, the warmth of connection, and the splendor of the senses. I'm so glad you're here. Pull up a pouf and let's dive in. Hello, beautiful beings, and welcome to today's episode, which is an invitation to take a little bit of breathing space. So at the time of this recording, it is the first week of a new month starting off the seedlings of a new season. And originally, I was going to share with you in this episode a few little hints towards some of the really exciting new treasures to come that are going to be debuted this month. From me to you and to the entire Come to Your Senses community. And I actually recorded five minutes of audio on it. But as the time got closer to reveal this episode, you know, I just kept feeling in my body like school has begun. A new season is whispering at the backs of our necks. And so let's just take this first week as a time for some breathing room to take in nothing new, and to just be with what's here. And I want to share with you today something from my own personal writing, which is a tribute and a love letter to the leek. I know it might seem a little random, but sometimes I am just so overcome with wonder and delight at the pleasures of the senses that I need to put it down on paper. And last winter, I was just so moved by my love for leeks that I wrote this passage in my journal. And I wanted to share it with you today. Because as we here in the Northern hemisphere transition out of the bright, acerbic flavors of berries and heirloom tomatoes and grilled vegetables and all of the treats and treasures of summer, we open our palates to some of the underworld treasures of salty potatoes and rich root vegetables and things like the fabulous fronds of a leek. And so today is really just an opportunity to Nestle in and to listen and receive and to whet your appetite for all the unique and distinct pleasures that are on their way in the season to come. Here we go. Leeks. Masculine exterior. Feminine interior. Oh! Green tipped Kings and queens. Long legged. Many layered. Full of androgynous allure. Hearty green leaves. Shoot up. Out of the earth. Rough and tough. Almost offensive. Shouting a battle cry like the adornment atop a medieval warriors helmet. When plucked from their bed, Shaggy roots cling loyally from the base of a tender, bulb like soldiers holding the line for their sovereign. But cut horizontally, and you will find layer upon layer of the most feminine of shapes. Vetiver. Green. Oval. Stare back at you. Growing in size and shape. Giving way to a bright lime exterior. Cut lengthwise and you will find a parade of miraculous ombré curves showing us that life flourishes along a soft, surrendered bend and perishes in the linear and the rigid. If you've ever eaten a leek without a proper rinse, you know that they hold deep secrets of the earth, soil, sand, and stone nestled between their thin layers like secret messages hidden in the pages of a book. Leeks are cousin to onions, scallions, garlic, shallots and chives, but they are much milder and sweeter than their cohorts. Truly, they are the Liesel von Trapp of the Allium family. Leeks have a long cultural history. The Welsh take deep pride in their leeks. They even wore leeks on their helmets to distinguish themselves in battle. Leeks were beloved by Egyptians, Greeks and Roman. But the history of humans relationships to leeks doesn't interest me much. What interests me most is their relationship with green olive oil. Salted butter. Creamy potatoes and melted mozzarella. So the next time you spot a leek hiding subtly in the lower levels of your produce section. Offer them a tip of your hat. Keepers of flavor, of history, of cheek. May we all bow deep to the marvelous leek. Thank you so much for listening, and I hope that your belly is stirring and your heart is bursting with appreciation for this one small treasure in nature's grand collection. Toasting you with a mug of warm potato leek soup. Have a wonderful week! For more gems on how to celebrate life through the richness of your senses, head to Mary Lofgren. Com.
